Why the condenser matters
The outdoor coil gets the worst of the dust, cottonwood fluff, pollution and kitchen exhaust. The US Department of Energy advises keeping the area around the outdoor unit clear and cleaning the condenser coil [1].
Step by step
- Switch off and isolate power at the outdoor unit.
- Remove leaves, plastic and fluff from the fins by hand or with a soft brush.
- Dilute Aerosure AC Coil Shining Concentrate as the label directs and apply it evenly to the fins.
- Leave it for the time on the label.
- Rinse gently with low-pressure water where the label calls for it, from the inside of the coil outwards if you can reach.
- Straighten any bent fins with a fin comb, let the unit dry and restore power.

- Remove debris. Remove leaves and fluff with a soft brush.
- Apply cleaner. Apply diluted Aerosure AC Coil Shining Concentrate as the label directs.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse gently where the label calls for it, comb bent fins, let it dry and restore power.

Quick answers
How often should an AC condenser be cleaned?
At least once before each summer, and more often in dusty, polluted or coastal areas.
How does a dirty outdoor coil affect power use?
A dirty condenser cannot reject heat, so pressure rises and the compressor works harder for the same cooling. Clean filters alone cut energy use by 5% to 15% versus clogged ones, according to the US Department of Energy.
Can I use a pressure washer on the outdoor coil?
Use low pressure only. A strong jet bends the aluminium fins and blocks airflow. Rinse from the inside out where you can.
