ULV fogging and fumigation machine for food and dairy plants
A ULV (ultra-low-volume) fogging machine, also called a fumigation machine, turns sanitiser into very fine droplets that reach the air, ceilings and hidden surfaces of packing halls, cold rooms and BMC rooms. Use a food-safe sanitiser such as INNOVA HP35 or INNOVA PAA 15, and keep the room closed and empty for the stated contact time.

Where it is used
- Packing halls
- Cold rooms and stores
- BMC and chilling rooms
- Filling rooms
- Ductwork and ceilings
How it works
- Clean first. Clean and rinse the room. Fogging finishes a clean; it does not replace it.
- Fog. Fill the tank with the sanitiser at the TDS concentration, close the room and fog it with no people inside.
- Wait and re-enter. Keep the room closed for the contact time, ventilate, and re-enter only after the time on the SDS.
Chemical pairing
| INNOVA product | Job | Dilution and contact time |
|---|---|---|
| INNOVA HP35 | Hydrogen peroxide oxidant, no chlorinated residue | As stated on the TDS |
| INNOVA PAA 15 | Peracetic acid, works at low temperature | As stated on the TDS |
| INNOVA Hypo | General disinfection | As stated on the TDS |
| INNOVA QuatShield | Quat-based surface hygiene | As stated on the TDS |
Fogging vs spraying vs formaldehyde fumigation
| ULV fogging | Hand spraying | Formaldehyde fumigation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Whole room, including ceilings | Only surfaces you can reach | Whole room |
| Residue | Depends on the sanitiser; peroxide and PAA break down | Depends on the product | Toxic residue that must be removed |
| Safety | Room empty, PPE for the operator | Operator exposure while spraying | Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen (IARC Group 1) |
| Time | Room closed for the contact time | Slow on large rooms | Long closure and airing time |
Safety
- Fog only empty rooms. No people or open product inside.
- Operator wears a respirator, goggles and gloves as the SDS says.
- Switch off smoke alarms only under your site permit, and switch them back on after.
- Re-enter only after the re-entry time on the sanitiser SDS, with the room ventilated.

ULV Fogging Machine: quick answers
What is ULV fogging used for?
An ultra-low-volume fogging machine disperses a disinfectant as very fine droplets, so it reaches spaces and corners that a hand spray cannot.
Is a fogging machine the same as a fumigation machine?
Buyers use both names. A ULV fogging machine disperses a liquid sanitiser as fine droplets. Older fumigation used formaldehyde, which is now avoided in food plants because it is a known human carcinogen.
Which sanitiser is used in a fogging machine for a dairy?
A food-safe oxidising sanitiser such as INNOVA HP35 or INNOVA PAA 15, at the concentration on the TDS.
How long should a room stay closed after fogging?
For the contact time and re-entry time on the sanitiser SDS. Ventilate before staff go back in.
